Experts Tour Bahamas’ Environment-Friendly Facilities

Eleuthera, The Bahamas - Some of The Bahamas’ environmental programs recently got close inspection and support from leading environmentalists.

Representatives from the Foundation for the Environment Education (FEE) traveled to The Bahamas for site visits of two Blue Flag marinas and a school involved with the FEE eco-school program. Blue Flag marinas and eco-schools are two of the five environment education programs administered by FEE, a non-governmental organization.

The site visits covered Atlantis and Cape Eleuthera marinas, two of the three Blue Flag marinas in the country. The Blue Flag is a label given only to beaches and marinas that have undertaken the highest possible commitments to sustainable development. The representatives also toured Deep Creek Middle School in Eleuthera, which has take up the environmental management and sustainable development education curriculum of the eco-school program...

The Bahamas to host a leg of World Harmony Run

NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The Bahamas will host for the first time ever, a portion of the World Harmony Run, bringing together youth, sports and civic groups in a display of unity for peace. According to its website, the World Harmony Run is a global relay that seeks to promote international friendship and understanding.  As a symbol of harmony, runners carry a flaming torch, passing it from hand to hand travelling over 100 nations around the globe.  

On Wednesday, February 17, 2010, World Harmony Torch Committee members and Bahamian stakeholders will visit schools on New Providence and have special assemblies highlighting the importance of peaces and conflict resolution.  

On Thursday, February 18, 2010, the torch travels to Grand Bahama for a torch run and ceremonies there.  Also that day, there will be celebrations at The College of The Bahamas scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ...

GBI Residents Support Grand Bahama Business Empowerment Lecture Series 2010

Alpha Brothers support HPH relief effort

Freeport, Grand Bahama - Brothers of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. on Grand Bahama gave their support to the Haitian relief effort launched by the support staff of Freeport Container Port (FCP), Freeport Harbour Company (FHC), Grand Bahama Airport Company (GBAC) and MSC Bahamas with a donation for the purchase of goods and supplies. The goods will be a part of the container being coordinated for shipment to Haiti.

TaDa's 'Bon Voyage' concert party a triumph

Nassau, Bahamas - With her farewell performance at Uptown Lounge this past Saturday night, there were mixed emotions amongst the crowd of about 350 fans in attendance. Many were excited to see what their favorite Bahamian artist/songwriter had 'up her sleeve', while others were solemn at the prospect of TaDa leaving the country indefinitely. Until the video footage is released later this week, one cannot really grasp fully the chic/cool/love vibes that TaDa, her band Sway, and her backup vocalists Wendy and Shane Lewis brought to the stage. Simply put, TaDa has definitely proven that she's THAT GIRL!

National Job Program Employees told to work hard

Nassau, Bahamas - Road Traffic Controller Philip Turner urged employees to move towards one objective in building the Road Traffic Department.

“If we build Road Traffic we are building The Bahamas and making a better transportation system,” Mr Turner said. “If we have good and reliable information then we can make better, strategic decisions. Let us work hard to build this organization.”

Mr Turner gave an overview of the Road Traffic Department to 19 employees hired to work for six months on various projects under the National Job Program recently introduced by the Government on February 5.  The new hires have been assigned to assist with automating the databases of the Road Traffic Department’s vehicle and driver’s licenses...

Haitian Immigrants to Return to Haiti

Nassau, Bahamas - The Ministry of National Security has confirmed that on Saturday, 6 February 2010, 78 Haitian migrants were intercepted in waters near the Exuma chain when the sloop in which they were sailing was sighted by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force on a routine patrol.  

Defence Force vessel HMBS P-45 spotted the 30-foot Haitian sailing sloop approximately 13 nautical miles southwest of Barreterre, Exuma.  The Haitian migrants, 64 males and 14 females, were transferred from their unseaworthy vessel and taken aboard Defence Force craft P-45 and P-49.   

The migrants, all of whom appeared to be in fair health, have been transferred to HMBS Bahamas. The United States Coast Guard is assisting the Royal Bahamas Defence Force in returning the migrants to Haiti...
