© 2009 Brian Kliewer This is a study of a young boy as he was walking by my studio. I liked the way the shadow of the building overtook him as he got closer.
I've always enjoyed figure work and portraiture, though I have rarely pursued either. A visitor to my studio saw one of my portraits once and said, "You've missed your calling." But I'm still here! I'm still painting! So, I'll be adding some of these on occasion. One of the most intense and exhilarating experiences I've ever had was when I was working on a portrait. I'd like to feel more of that. But there's more to it than just that. A friend of mine doesn't like figures in paintings and that's fine. So why do I? I like the idea of being able to express emotions beyond just a pretty scene. Adding people to my work helps me to do that. A title can be tied in with what a person is thinking or just nuanced enough so that the viewer can take more away from the work than that it's just "pretty." While that can be done with a landscape, I can't really focus on human emotion with them. So there will be a greater mix in subject matter from here on. That will also help me to stay in it -- to hold my interest more. I hope the viewer will enjoy them and maybe get a better understanding of my thoughts as well. Art, to me, is all about connecting with people. It's my "voice." If you would like to be informed of future projects and special offers, please subscribe to my newsletter.
