NYT Article on the McCain/Hayworth Senate Race

Excerpts From the New York Times:

Mr. McCain remains a formidable force in his home state, through the sheer power of his name and fat campaign coffers. Most political analysts suggest that Mr. Hayworth begins as the underdog, and Mr. McCain’s supporters say they are confident.

“Senator McCain takes every race seriously,” said Brian Rogers, a spokesman for the senator’s re-election campaign, “and is confident that the voters of Arizona will again return him to office as they have done in the past, and he is working hard to earn their continued support.

Mr. McCain, a tireless campaigner since he was first elected to the Senate in 1986, is taking nothing for granted. He has clocked many hours doing town hall meetings and other campaign events and has already run three radio advertisements in Phoenix.

His campaign, concerned that Mr. Hayworth was taking an unfair — and possibly illegal — advantage of his position as a talk show host on the right-leaning radio station KFYI (550 AM), filed a complaint
against him with the
Federal Communications Commission; Mr. Hayworth quickly resigned from his spot, bringing an end to such orations as “get ready for earthquake amnesty” after the earthquake in Haiti.

Mr. McCain and Mr. Hayworth are not lifetime adversaries. During Mr. McCain’s presidential run in 2000, Mr. Hayworth campaigned for him aggressively. But the two parted ideological ways shortly after that election, and Mr. Hayworth has been dinging him ever since.

But on balance, Mr. McCain has enjoyed a deep base among the state’s more centrist Republicans, independents and Democrats, and his fund-raising abilities — he has roughly $5 million in the bank for this race — and greater institutional support statewide have been unbeatable.

Even within the fractured Tea Party movement, Mr. McCain is not without support. He is endorsed by Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts, the populist movement’s darling, and Sarah Palin, his running mate in the 2008 presidential campaign. And Dick Armey, whose FreedomWorks organization has become front and center in the movement, says he is throwing his support behind Mr. McCain.

Indeed Mr. Hayworth, a former sportscaster who rode the 1994 wave of conservatism into Congress, where he then served six
terms, has political baggage.
He was a very large recipient of both money and largess — like sports skyboxes — from the disgraced lobbyist
Jack Abramoff. His loss to Harry E. Mitchell, a Democrat, in his 2006 re-election bid was humiliating, and underscored voter distaste for some of his more boisterous ways.

In interviews with roughly 20 Republican voters in Scottsdale and the conservative city of Gilbert, not a Hayworth supporter could be found. “I think McCain’s doing a yeoman’s job, and I’ll vote for him as long as he runs,” said Jerry Ebner, 59, a computer consultant in Scottsdale.

HOW THE GOP WILL WIN THE SENATE By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

Published on DickMorris.com on February 8, 2010

Printer-Friendly Version

If the Republican Party wins every senate seat in which it now holds a lead, according to Rasmussen’s polls, it will capture eight Democratic seats while holding all of its own. The two remaining pickups, to assure control, could be in Indiana where former Senator Dan Coats may run against Senator Evan Bayh and in California.

Even if Coats does not run, former Congressman John Hostettler is only behind Bayh by 44-41. And, in California, former Hewlitt Packhard CEO Carly Fiorina is also only three points behind Senator Barbara Boxer.

(This assumes that former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson takes on Senator Russ Feingold).

Here's the data:

In these eight races, the Republican is ahead:

State
Contest
Latest Polling
Date

Delaware
Castle v Coones
Castle +29
Jan

ND
Hoeven v unknown
Hoeven +20 (v Dorgan)
Dec

Ark
Lincoln v 4 opps
Repub (Baker) +19
Feb

Nev
Reid v 3 opps
Repub (Tarkanian) +8
Feb

Colorado
Norton v Bennet
Norton +14
Feb

Penn
Toomey v Specter
Toomey +9
Jan

Illinois
Kirk v Giannoulias
Kirk +6
Feb

Wisconsin
Thompson v Feingold
Thompson +3

And, in these two states, the results are close:

State
Contest
Latest Polling
Date

California
Boxer v 3 opps
Boxer (v Fiorina) +3
Jan

Indiana
Bayh v Hostettler
Bayh +3

If Republicans take all ten seats, they take control in the Senate.

In addition strong challenges may be shaping up in New York against Kirsten Gillibrand and in Washington State against Patty Murray.

Gillibrand, appointed to fill Hillary's seat, is very vulnerable, both in a primary against former Tennessee Democratic Congressman Harold Ford and in a general election. If a strong candidate emerges, she and/or Ford could be defeated.

And in Washington State, innovative businessman (and millionaire) Paul Akers is likely to run against Patty Murray. The Washington State senator only won with 55% of the vote last time, a poor performance for a three term incumbent. Akers' company takes new technologies, buys them, and then uses them to create jobs. He should give Murray a tough race which he could end up winning.

But the message of Massachusetts is that any Republican can beat any Democrat anywhere. So don't count out former Congressman Rob Simmons' race against Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal or any possible candidate against Oregon's Ron Wyden and New York's Chuck Schumer.

The Republicans will win the Senate (and the House) and might win it with a few seats to spare!

Obama's Secret War in Pakistan Exposed

School bombing exposes Obama's secret war inside Pakistan
By Christina Lamb, Times Online

THE discovery of three American soldiers among the dead in a suicide bombing at the opening of a girls' school in the northwestern Pakistan town of Dir last week reignited the fears of many Pakistanis that Washington was set on invading their country.

Barack Obama has banned the Bush-era term "war on terror" and dithered about sending extra troops to Afghanistan, but across the border in Pakistan, the US president has dramatically stepped up the covert war against Islamic extremists. US airstrikes in Pakistan, launched from unmanned drones, are now averaging three a week, triple the number last year.

"We're quietly seeing a geographical shift," an intelligence officer said. For the past month drones have pounded the tribal region of North Waziristan in apparent retaliation for the murder of seven CIA officers in Afghanistan by a Jordanian suicide bomber working with the Pakistani Taliban.

Last week America launched its first multiple drone attack, according to Pakistani security officials. Eighteen missiles were fired from eight unmanned aircraft in Dattakhel village, killing 16 people. The discovery of the dead US soldiers revealed that America's shadowy war in Pakistan not only involves drones but also small cadres of special operations soldiers.

GOP winning war over Miranda rights for terrorists By: Byron York

On Capitol Hill, there's a war being fought over the War on Terror, and so far, Republicans are winning. Or at least they're winning the Battle of Miranda.

GOP lawmakers believe they are having some success in the effort to stiffen the spine of the Obama administration as it makes policy for dealing with captured terrorist suspects in the future. Even as the administration defends its decision to grant accused Detroit bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab the right to remain silent, the president himself is hinting that things might be done differently in the future.

"Should the practice of reading suspected terrorist their Miranda rights be reviewed?" CBS's Katie Couric asked President Obama during Sunday's Super Bowl interview. "Absolutely," Obama answered. "Everything should be reviewed."

"It's important for us to recognize," Obama explained, "that when we're dealing with al Qaeda operatives, that they may have national security intelligence that we need, and it's important to make sure that the processes and procedures we approach with respect to these folks are not identical to the ones we would use if we were apprehending the local drug dealer."

Translation: Maybe we'll do it differently next time.

While Obama hints at changes, he and his administration are still trying to justify their actions in the Detroit case. "They're changing their story constantly to try to defend their tactics," says a knowledgeable source on Capitol Hill.

For example, we know that the FBI interrogated Abdulmutallab for just 50 minutes before Attorney General Eric Holder decided to advise the suspect of his Miranda rights to remain silent and to have a court-appointed attorney. After that, Abdulmutallab shut up.

Republicans hit the administration hard on that point, especially when the White House made the unbelievable claim that agents had gotten every last bit of valuable information from Abdulmutallab in that brief talk. In response to GOP criticism, administration officials leaked the story that Abdulmutallab actually stopped talking before being read his Miranda rights, meaning Holder's decision was not to blame for cutting off the brief flow of intelligence.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, say knowledgeable sources on Capitol Hill. "It is totally false that he had stopped cooperating and then they made the decision to Mirandize him," says one GOP source.

"They made the decision, and then they weren't trying to question him any more."

After a few days of rebuttal, Republicans thought they had knocked the story down. But then came Obama, in the Super Bowl interview, when Couric said Abdulmutallab "was giving information to the FBI, then his rights were read to him and he clammed up."

"Well, that's actually not what happened," Obama said. "What happened was, he clammed up, and after we had obtained actionable intelligence from him, that's when the FBI folks on the ground then read him his Miranda rights."

No matter what the president says, Republicans are firm in their insistence that that's not the way it happened.

Just a few hours before Obama spoke, some top GOP lawmakers were astonished to hear White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan, appearing on "Meet the Press," claim that they had known about -- and had not objected to -- the administration's decision to read Abdulmutallab his rights.

Brennan said he called four top GOP lawmakers -- Sens. Mitch McConnell and Christopher Bond and Reps. John Boehner and Peter Hoekstra -- on Christmas night, just hours after Abdulmutallab
tried to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253. Brennan said he told the Republicans that the FBI had a suspect in custody; from that, Brennan claimed, the lawmakers should have inferred that Abdulmutallab would be read his Miranda rights.

"None of those individuals raised any concerns with me at that point," Brennan said. "They didn't say, 'Is he going into military custody? Is he going to be Mirandized?'"

Within hours of Brennan's TV appearance, all four GOP lawmakers denied the story. "Brennan never told me of any plans to Mirandize the Christmas Day bomber," said Bond. "It never came up," said Hoekstra. Spokesman for McConnell and Boehner denied it, too.

GOP lawmakers don't expect to hear that charge again. And they believe that, in the big picture, while administration officials continue to push back, Obama himself appears to be giving ground. To Republicans, that's progress.

"They're going to review this policy, whether they acknowledge it or not," says another well-placed GOP source. "And it only happened because of the concerns that we raised."

Obama Admits Healthcare Reform May Die on Hill

Obama admits health care overhaul may die on Hill

AP

No, maybe he can't. President Barack Obama, who insisted he would succeed where other presidents had failed to fix the nation's health care system, now concedes the effort may die in Congress.

The president's newly conflicting signals could frustrate Democratic lawmakers who are hungry for guidance from the White House as they try to salvage the effort to extend coverage to millions of uninsured Americans and hold down spiraling medical costs.

Obama's comments Thursday night came hours after Republican Scott Brown was sworn in to replace the late Edward M. Kennedy, leaving Democrats without their filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, and Obama's signature health legislation with no clear path forward.

"I think it's very important for us to have a methodical, open process over the next several weeks, and then let's go ahead and make a decision," Obama said at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser. "And it may be that ... if Congress decides we're not
going to do it, even after all the facts are laid out, all the options are
clear, then the American people can make a judgment as to whether this Congress has done the right thing for them or not," the president said. "And that's how democracy works. There will be elections coming up, and they'll be able to make a determination and register their concerns."
