Saturday Learn 'n Turn Program

What: KWA Learn ‘n Turn

When: Saturdays, 9AM to noon
Who: All NWA members with an interest in improving woodturning skills
Where: Opdahl Center for Higher Turning aka Opdahl Building

The Kaatskill Woodturners offer a Saturday program, working closely with beginning and experienced woodturners to improve their skills on supervised projects. Led by Steve Sherman and Matt Clarke, the format of the meeting features a demonstration of a particular project, followed by hands-on supervision with each participant. Projects will cover specific turning skills, ranging from scoops and spoons to salt boxes and Christmas ornaments. We will also explore surface decoration, paint, air brush and texturing.

The series is ongoing on Saturday mornings at the Opdahl Building, unless special events and holidays intervene. There is no tuition cost, but participants are asked for a $5 contribution for each session attended to cover materials.

Contact: Steve Sherman, 845-246-9182 or Matt Clarke, 845-454-9387 for more information

Kaatskill Woodturners Meeting November 11

What: Kaatskill Woodturners Regular Meeting
When: Wednesday November 11, 2009
Where: Opdahl Building
Who: Keith Tompkins, Steve Sherman, Matt Clarke

Keith Tompkins will join us at our monthly KWA meeting this Wednesday, the 11th at the "Opdahl Center for Higher Turning".

Known for his ability to keep things simple, Keith will discuss the importance of varying the tool rest height in relation to turned objects. Technical aspects of tooling & turning will be explored to help us push the envelope, ... whether beginner or advanced.

Matt Clarke & Steve Sherman might fill in whenever Keith decides to take a breath. We are going to have fun! Don't miss it!

The photo is one of Keith's earlier pieces that broke barriers in the turning world. Click on it for a larger view.

Change in Date for Mid-Hudson Woodworkers Meeting

Please note that the date of the Mid-Hudson meeting has been changed to Thursday November 12, 2009. This is one week earlier than usual.

What: Mid-Hudson Woodworkers Meeting
When: Thursday November 12, 2009 at 7:30 PM
Where: Hurley Reformed Church

Who: Everyone. This will be mainly a "Show and Tell" meeting program so round up a project, a tip or technique and bring it to share with everyone. These meetings are always fun and informative so be sure not to miss it! Chapter president Pete Chast will give a demonstration on glass cutting something that always challenges many of us.

The project for hands-on work by kids at next spring's Showcase 2010 is a coffee can birdhouse. We will need more coffee cans for this project so be sure to save any one pound (more or less) for the Toy Factory. Either metal or plastic will work. Foil coated cardboard will not. Ask your friends and neighbors to save theirs too!

Deadline for Scout's Silent Auction

Any items for the Scout's silent auction are now needed by John Grossbohlin. If anyone has items, you can hand them off to any of the Wednesday Woodworkers and someone will see that they are at the Opdahl Building by the KWA meeting on November 11. The banquet and auction are on November 12.
