VANDALIA — A small fire burned several pieces of wood under the roof at Friendly’s on Tuesday. Employees saw smoke and called the fire department and evacuated the restaurant. City of Vandalia Communications Manager Rich Hopkins said there were crews working at Friendly’s in the attic and just below the roof portion of the building and must have sparked the small fire. Fire crews quickly handled the situation. Hopkins said the restaurant will have some electrical issues to deal with and said it was likely they would not be open for several days. He said the loss amount will be minimal. Among the fire divisions that responded were Vandalia, Englewood, Butler Township, Harrison Township and Huber Heights.
VANDALIA — The City of Vandalia Monday unanimously approved a conditional use to allow Acorn Acres, a nature-based daycare learning center, to be used at 9385 N. Dixie Drive. The conditional use allows the facility to be used as a daycare center and educational facility that will be open from 6 a.m until 6 p.m. during weekdays. Keith and Lisa Brinnon, investors in the project, were on hand and stated their intentions to make the facility a nature based learning center, or a daycare center that will feature learning workshops as well as animal interaction for learning purposes. The main facility will be designed similar to a barn with a barn theme, but will have the full amenities of a normal building. “We will have your standard classroom learning plus nature based, where you get back to experiencing nature, what it’s all about,” Keith Brinnon said.
VANDALIA — It’s time to break out the lawn chairs, contact family and friends and let the festivities begin for the 35th annual Air Show Parade. The Air Show and parade are a month earlier than usual this year, and the parade will hit the streets of Vandalia this Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. The 2013 edition of the Air Show Parade will highlight many familiar favorites like the Butler High School marching band, Kickline and guard, the Wee Aviators football teams and cheerleading squads, and police and fire units from both Vandalia and Butler Township. Of special note is the multiple entries by the Shriners. While Shriners have been a traditional part of the parade, this year the parade will have what is known as a Potentate’s Call Out. This means that up to 26 units of Shriners will be in the parade including pipers, classic cars, Indy cars, Bobbies, a brass band, Kentucky Colonels, and more.
LAS VEGAS – Vandalia’s Kristin Smith will represent Ohio in the Miss USA pageant tonight in Las Vegas. Smith, a 2009 graduate of Butler High School, says she was inspired by her friendship with Blake LaForce, a student at Butler who died shortly after their graduation. Smith graduated from Miami University in May with a degree in strategic communication and a minor in marketing. In her biography on the Miss USA website, Smith said she had a very typical Midwest upbringing. She was a varsity cheerleader for football and basketball, a member of the student government, in the Latin club, and was an officer in the National Honor Society.
